Grades

Music is a very active and "hands on" subject. Students will learn about music through singing, playing instruments, reading, composition, improvisation, and movement. Since being active plays such an important role in developing a child's musical skills and knowledge, the students will receive a participation grade for each music class that they attend. Students can earn up to 5 points in each class by being attentive and engaged in the lesson, by participating fully in all class activities, and by following the directions the first time that they are given (*See below). Other grades may be based on worksheets, quizzes, and assessments that are given throughout the year.

Students in 3rd-5th Grade are responsible for bringing their recorders & folders with them to each music class. Failure to do so will result in a lower participation grade for that particular class. They also play their songs for grades in music class.

Report Card Grades for Music:

*The grade that appears on the report card is based on the total grades/points that the child has earned in a grading period.

"C.M.L." Grades for students in K-3:

Students in Grades K-3 will participate in some additional music classes for one grading period of the 2019-2020 school year. These classes occur on Day 5 of the rotating schedule and are called "C.M.L" classes or "Connecting Music & Literature." While we use books for various music class activities in all grade levels throughout the year, it is not the main focus of our music classes. The purpose of the C.M.L. classes is to specifically explore music activities that relate to particular books, with the additional goals of developing musical skills and increasing a love of books and reading. Students will receive participation points for these C.M.L. classes, but they will be listed separately from their traditional class participation points in Sapphire.
